Tony Peters Contemporary Oil and mixed Media Artist
Tony Peters draws from his passion for the rich history and architecture of Southern California. In the tradition of the landscape painter, he combs the city in search of views that inspire a sense of awe. For him, these subjects are not just picturesque scenes; they include tattered street corners, bustling train yards, the winding LA River, and the vast web of freeways that crisscross Los Angeles. Each location tells a story, capturing the essence of urban life in a city defined by its contrasts.
Peters was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Art Center College of Design, where he honed his skills and developed his unique artistic voice. During his time at the college, he worked as an assistant at the Mendenhall Gallery in Pasadena, where he met and later apprenticed under notable painters like Richard Bunkall. This experience allowed him to refine his technique and deepen his understanding of landscape painting.
Since graduating in 2000, Peters has enjoyed a prolific career as an artist, showcasing his work in over twenty gallery exhibitions. His art has been featured in prominent publications such as Southwest Art magazine, and he has completed numerous private commissions that highlight his ability to capture the spirit of a place.
In addition to his local explorations, Peters continues to travel to Europe and New York, where he photographs and paints along the way. He finds inspiration in the subtle details of each location, such as the varied light cast on the East Coast, which contrasts with the warm hues of Southern California. However, his first love remains the winding metropolis of Los Angeles, where he continues to be moved by the quiet beauty of a screaming city. Through his work, Peters invites viewers to see the extraordinary in the everyday, revealing the hidden poetry in urban landscapes.
